Fostering Interest and Engagement in Nonfiction Reading: Exploring Informational Texts with the iPad

One of the keys of teaching is helping students connect with the content they are learning about. iPads foster inquiry-based thinking, allowing students to engage with content in a way that wasn’t possible with a two-dimensional worksheet. Additionally, giving students the autonomy to own their own tech experiences can have enormous impact.

With more and more focus being placed on teaching nonfiction texts, it can be difficult to keep students interested in the content and engaged in learning. Fortunately, teachers have an incredible resource on-hand: the iPad. Technology opens up an entirely new world of possibilities in learning, from interactive stories and leveled-text, to creative multimedia content, students are able to integrate ideas and take in information in a more meaningful way.

When students are engaged in the learning process, and able to interact with the texts at the push of a button—or swipe of the screen—they feel more connected with the content, which creates buy-in. But as teachers know better than anyone, learning doesn’t start and end on the screen. Using interactive material on the iPads prompts students to investigate topics and language further, and allows teachers to host classroom discussions on the content students have just engaged with. This session will help educators plan an iPad lesson focused on nonfiction text and student engagement.
