I'll Take You There! Optimizing Field Trips by Creating Authentic Learning Connections

Let’s go! Field trips or field studies provide students with the opportunity to participate in authentic learning that can engage them as participatory scientists, historians, artists, researchers, interviewers, or journalists (depending on your discipline) and also connect classroom content to the outside world. Whether your “out and about” field trip is local, national, or a virtual tour from your classroom, toting mobile devices gives students a connection to create and contribute as participatory citizens from wherever they are.

In this session, we’ll explore how students can be collectors and curators, researchers, citizen sleuths, practitioners, creators and reviewers as they visit, investigate, research and contribute to local or national projects. We’ll share some student examples on how art museum visits, local historical sites or citizen science projects have added to classroom learning and engagement. We’ll look at how students can partner with local or national entities and participate in compelling projects or create real world connections of their own. We’ll provide tips and techniques for setting up meaningful “on the go” learning activities and traveling with mobile devices on classroom field trips (no wifi necessary!). You’ll try out some apps and techniques that can enhance field trips, and during the session, we’ll take several field excursions of our own - just to get the hang of things.
