The Standards for Mathematical Practice guide teachers to not only focus on what to teach but also how students learn mathematics. With Common Core, teachers are also expected to teach rigorous content and in a different way. iPad is just the tool for the job. Join a middle school teacher and two of her students in an exploration of tools and activities that motivate, engage, and help students become mathematical thinkers.

There are 8 standards for mathematical practice that guide problem solving in the classroom. The skills expected of students force teachers to take a different role in the classroom. As students investigate, develop understanding of material, and arrive at their own conjectures around mathematics, teachers move away from the direct instruction approach and become facilitators of learning. The Standards for Mathematical Practice make students independent learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. This requires a different way of teaching and learning.

The goals and objectives of this session are to arm teachers with an understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice and align tools, activities, and projects that support them. See how students use iPads to access rich content, organize and formulate their thinking, and share what they learned in creative ways. Participants will explore online resources such as Desmos, Geometer’s Sketch Pad, and interactive websites as well as hear how students use devices to create meaning of content and express their learning using learning management systems, projects, blogging, screencasting and more. Join the discussion and contribute your own ideas and experiences. Participants will leave the session with resources, tools, and projects they can take back and try in their own educational setting.
