Teach Coding by Developing the App First!
Limited Capacity seats available

In this session, I will show you how I went from not knowing any coding language to publishing my first app in the App store in just one month. I did not know ANY Objective C code at all - not one line. There is web-based software that allowed me to develop and publish an app first and then use Xcode to debug the app to learn how to code. That open source software provided me with the lines of code that I could use, modify and improve as needed. Anyone can learn to code - let me show you how can learn/teach coding using a web browser and Xcode 6!

Plus a special One More Thing segment... learn to code in Swift in your math classes using an iPad.

Limited Capacity seats available

If you are a 1:1 iPad teacher looking for fun new ways to use creative apps we have the session for you. In this workshop session we’ll play with some great apps that you may have overlooked, and learn together how to app-smash to unleash your student’s creativity. No matter what grade or subject you teach you will find something new that you can take back to the classroom with you next week. Bring your iPad and a list of your favorite apps for this hands on learning experience.

This session will also show you how to master the workflow on an iPad, something that can be one of the most challenging aspects of using iPads in the classroom. Augmented Reality: Engaged in Technology or Learning?
Limited Capacity seats available

Augmented Reality has captured the imagination of innovative educators worldwide. But with such an engaging mode of technology, how do we harness the persuasive power of Augmented Reality to enhance learning and fully engage students in the process of learning? Participants in this session will create an effective Augmented Reality experience by linking a self created personalised tutorial created in Explain Everything with the Augmented Reality App Aurasma. The data collected from a formal study at Matthew Flinders College in Australia in 2013 will be analysed in order for participants to gain a better understanding of effective use of Augmented Reality.

#makemathsocial with CueThink. Unleash Peer-to-Peer Math Learning and Capture Student Thinking
Limited Capacity seats available

This Innovation Lab is a hands-on, deep dive into the connections between a problem solving framework, the mathematical practice standards, and support for students’ mathematical conversations. We will be using the CueThink platform for this purpose, an iPad application developed to foster digital creativity and deep learning.
In this session, participants become active peer-to-peer problem solvers, and experience how an end-to-end platform enhances student engagement and mathematical thinking. They will work through Polya’s four phases of problem solving and use annotation tools to provide intelligent feedback to peer’s math solutions. Our approach resembles Bansho, an instructional strategy that captures the development of students’ individual and collective thinking. We hope to have local students to facilitate this process.
Examples of student generated “thinklets” will be shared, framed as opportunities for professional learning directed at teaching strategies for 21st century skills such as formative assessment, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

Leaving the lab, participants will retain access to their CueThink accounts, thinklets, and content that can serve as as exemplars of metacognitive problem solving to bring back to their classrooms. After the conference, CueThink will host #makemathsocial twitter chats to continue the conversations and encourage more teachers in the community to share best practices on problem solving.
CueThink has been designed to improve students' math problem-solving skills. At the heart of the platform are ""thinklets"" - video vignettes of solution strategies created by students with the help of scaffolds and rubrics. As learners develop systematic problem-solving skills, they are also able to share and learn from peers ""just like me"" while building a rich portfolio of strategies. CueThink leverages what students already know and do well – social media, content publishing, and gaming - and brings those experiences to the math classrooms, thereby deepening student engagement and learning.

If we teach differently to kids who think differently, they can change the world. Programming courses too often involve textbook exercises, robotics, rockets, or race cars. But computer science isn’t just for CS majors. Programming involves patient problem-solving, creativity, design, and collaboration, areas in which many kids, particularly girls, have typically excelled. Experience an innovative new approach to teaching programming using cutting-programming tools to explore art, games, puzzles, and stories.

Come On, Get Appy! App Smash Using Video Creation Apps to Meet Common Core Standards
Limited Capacity seats available

Get your students creating dynamic multimedia projects with iPads! In this session, we will use several creation apps and explore how they can be app-smashed to increase student creativity and address Common Core State Standards.

The session will begin with an overview of Tellagami, Green Screen, and iMovie and how the three can be used in concert to create dynamic video projects. Examples will be shown, and participants will share ways in which students could use these three apps together in the classroom in order to address Common Core standards.

There will be a brief demonstration of each app and how to create in one app, save to the camera roll, and use the creation in the other apps. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice creating an original project using Tellagami, Green Screen, iMovie and other creation apps in this session. Depending on the audience, other apps such as Skitch, Explain Everything/Educreations, and Keynote may also be introduced as apps that can be used to create multimedia projects.

Last, participants will have the opportunity to share their creations with others and to debrief on the experience. We will create a collaborative document with potential possibilities of using these apps with students.

App-Smash Your Way to CCSS!
Limited Capacity seats available

Across the country, teachers are looking for ideas on how to integrate technology into their classrooms while simultaneously adapting curriculum to meet Common Core Standards. Designed for K-5 teachers, this workshop will introduce which apps can directly correlate to ELA CCSS in Reading, Writing and Speaking/Listening. We will even show authentic, real-world projects and bring along student-created samples from our school site!

The first goal of our session will be exposing attendees to several free and paid apps such as Educreations, Nearpod, Skitch, Pages, Trading Card, and Sonic Pics. Although we will be focused on ELA, elementary students can utilize these apps in order to demonstrate their knowledge of Common Core Standards in all subject areas.

Second, we will focus on how app-stacking (utilizing multiple apps) can create dynamic, authentic projects to be used for summative and/or formative assessments as well as projects and collaborative work.

The session will conclude with hands-on use! Participants will be given time to explore apps and app-stack as much as they can in one task!

Students as Producers & Creators: How to Use App Smashing on the iPad to Create an iBook
Limited Capacity seats available

Wouldn’t it be amazing to see elementary and middle school students unleash their innate creativity by building extraordinary technology projects?
The focus of this session is to introduce participants to a number of innovative ways in which iPads and MacBooks can be used in conjunction with one another in a classroom to build high quality, student-made iBooks that will dramatically increase the student learning experience.
In this presentation, participants will learn how to use iPads and MacBooks with elementary and middle school audiences in ways that enable students to illustrate their higher order thinking in multifaceted ways. Specifically, the presenter will provide a brief overview of iBooks Author, Apple’s free eBook authoring application as well as illustrate how to use iBooks Author to create a final product that comes in the form of an iBook enriched with text, pictures, review questions, and personal videos and narrations. Additionally, the presenter will demonstrate how teachers and students can use App Smashing with the Tellagami, iMovie, and VideoMix iPad apps to create videos that they will embed in the iBook. Moreover, the presenter will show how teachers and students can use GarageBand and Keynote in conjunction with each other to create a short introductory video that will further enrich their iBook and give it a professional look. Finally, the presenter will show how to use Sketch Up, a 3D application, to create 3-dimensional interactive objects, and how to import these objects into the iBook using the appropriate widget.
The activities shared in this dynamic event are aligned to several Technology, Language Arts, and Math Common Core Standards across grade levels. Participants are encouraged to bring an iPad 2 or higher and a MacBook.
